After a long career as a Hollywood makeup artist and hair stylist for the stars, Vivian Penuela-Maxwell decided to revisit and embrace her childhood love of horses. What started out as a therapeutic hobby, resulted in the establishment of her life's purpose: creating Sweetwater Sanctuary.
Our journey began in 2019 when Vivian adopted her first rescue horse, a life-changing experience that ignited a passion for equine advocacy and rescue. Since then, we have been committed to creating a compassionate environment where every horse can heal -- emotionally and physically -- at its own pace.
At Sweetwater Sanctuary, we believe that every horse deserves a second chance. Our mission is to provide a sanctuary for those who have faced, trauma, neglect, or are at risk of auction and slaughter. We also aim to support horse owners seeking retirement options for their beloved companions, ensuring they receive the love and care they deserve in their later years.
We embrace a philosophy of natural horsemanship, guided by gentle handling and respect for each horse's unique needs. Our sanctuary is a space where these magnificent animals can thrive, surrounded by understanding and compassion.
